When you don't have anyone to talk to then you can work on learning to read. Only, I think you have to somehow keep up with the speaking. Only, I am not sure how to do that other than with talking with people.
I find that when I have to speak with people in Japanese that my mind imagines the situation I will be in and what I will say. I think that this forethought is good exercise for speaking a language.
I find that if there is noone to talk to that I don't think about what I am going to say. I am thinking all that expensive material for learning Japanese Maybe it is working for you somehow that you are going to Japan someday?

I went to Little Tokyo here yesterday and bought some books for children with disc. I listened to them and they are too easy for me. But, I have not found anything like recorded books for adults in Japanese.
